For the seventh consecutive year, Missionary Independent Spiritual Church is sponsoring Our Hoodoo Heritage Festival in Forestville, California.

These classes in African American folk magic, root work, and hoodoo will teach you practical tricks and tips to take your conjure work to a new level of confidence and knowledge. In addition to spell casting, we also showcase the mystery and magic of world-wide folk religions.

Registration for classes begins during the month of JANUARY, 2011. Pre-payment is by Paypal. We encourage folks to sign up well ahead of the event, as some of these classes have limited enrollment.

Palo Road-Opening Ceremony in the Congo-Cuban African Diasporic Tradition

Dr. Christos Kioni will lead us in a Palo Road-Opening Ceremony in the Congo-Cuban African Diasporic Tradition -- a ritual for the empowerment and benefit of all attendees. This invocation will open the Workshop Weekend and bring strength, energy, and spiritual focus to all who attend.

Making Doll-Babies for Ritual Use

Dr. E. will lead a hands-on workshop in Making and Catching a Spirit in a Doll-Baby for ritual use. This class covers everything from the historical perspective to hands-on work with dolls made from twigs, cloth, wax, clay, and other materials. Bring personal concerns of someone you wish to embody in your doll -- and be prepared to baptize your doll in the name of that someone special. This 1 1/2 hour workshop leads directly into the workshop on mirror boxes

Hoodoo Food! The Best of the Conjure Cook-Off

Sister Robin Petersen will present her annual Hoodoo Foods and Conjure Cook-Off. In the Hoodoo Foods! workshop on Conjure Cookery, Magical Chefs have submitted recipes for publication in this year's Recipe Round-Up booklet, and those attending the workshop are bringing your sorcerous dishes in for sharing and taste testing. Prizes will be awarded to the top three conjure cooks. Extra "Hoodoo Food!" recipe booklets will be sold to benefit the work of Missionary Independent Spiritual Church. Any food not eaten by participants at the workshop will become part of the general Party Potluck.

Making and Working With Mirror Boxes

Sister Robin Petersen will conduct a hands-on class on Making and Working With Mirror Boxes to trap spirits -- such as the one who was put in the doll-baby you just made in Dr. E.'s workshop! Your custom mirror box will be prepared in a ritual manner and the doll will be interred in it, so that all deeds, both good and evil, will reflect back to the one embodied in the doll. All materials are supplied and Robin guarantees that even craft-newbies will make and take home a beautiful hand-made wooden decoupaged mirror box.

Making a Consecrated Palo Protection Amulet

Dr. Christos Kioni will lead an intensive workshop in Making a Consecrated Palo Protection Amulet in a seashell for you to take home and bury at your doorstep. Container spells are found in all of the African diasporic religious and magical paths, including hoodoo, conjure, rootwork, obeah, Palo Monte, Voodoo, Santeria, and Lukumi. This Palo amulet, called a macuto, is one of the oldest and most traditional forms of all.

World-wide Traditions of Bone Reading

D. John Michael Hilford teaches a two-hour intensive workshop in world-wide traditions of Bone Reading (also known as Throwing the Bones or Casting the Bones). This training will combine Sangoma Bone Reading (as taught by Mvanah Maloti), shamanic Peruvian Bone Casting, and the down-home methods of the African American Spiritualist prophet Reverend J. of Camp Chesterfield, Indiana, and now, for the first time, he is bringing it all back home to American hoodoo practitioners. This is a rare opportunity to learn bone-reading, and it is one workshop you must not miss.

The following members of The Association of Independent Readers and Rootworkers (AIRR) and other professionals will be on site during the Apprenticeship Week and Workshop Weekend and will be offering readings.   Potluck food and beverages will be provided both days. In addition, participants are invited to sample the fantastic magical concoctions from the Hoodoo Foods and Conjure Cook-Off Workshop.

  Seating for the workshops is in open-air tents at chairs and tables on an uneven, grassy lawn. If you use a wheel chair, you will require assistance. Seating outside of the classes and workshops is somewhat limited, so if you want to spread out and party on the grass, bring a blanket or beach towel or your own portable lawn chairs!
• DOGS
  This event is DOG-FRIENDLY, as long as yours is a friendly dog. We have a large enclosed dog run available for the use of any dogs who need a break from the folk magic festivities.
